Review: Beauty Bakerie Cake Mix Demi- Matte Foundation

I took the plunge and bought a non-drugstore priced foundation online y’all! After a long process of looking at swatches and reviews, adjusting my phone and laptops brightness, then looking at more swatches and reviews I took a calculated risk and bought the Beauty Bakerie Cake Mix Demi- Matte Foundation in shade #11.

I’ve been following Beauty Bakerie for a few years now and have been watching the hype around them grow. Up until now, I had only purchased one of their Matte Lip Whips. Like, it was so long ago that they were still using the rectangular packaging. While I loved the color, the formula was just too drying on my lips and that’s saying a lot for someone who basically collects liquid lipsticks.

I was worried about picking the correct shade, especially since my skin seems to be getting deeper as I age, which turns out o be pretty common. So I’m hunting down a whole new foundation collection. Not fun at all. Luckily, thanks to Cocoa Swatches , Youtubers like Too Much Mouth, Jackie Aina, and Vicky Logan, plus the shade matching chart on the Beauty Bakerie site, I was able to figure out my best shade match in the first go round.

First things first. The packaging is adorable and I like how they relate everything back to baking, including the instructions.

I saw that a lot of people found this foundation hard to blend, especially with a brush, but I didn’t have this problem. I did take note that they said it dries down quickly so I worked in sections instead of trying to do my whole face at once. Let’s get into the pros and cons now:

Pros
  • A comfortable meeting of high end and drugstore cost at a price point of $28
  • Medium, but buildable coverage
  • Did not settle or break up around my smile lines
  • Very smooth finish
  • Doesn’t dry down to look so dry that it is cakey
  • Wide shade range
  • Good for oily skin
  • Does not transfer as much as other foundations
Cons
  • Extremely dry feeling
  • Accentuates fine lines
  • Dries down very quickly so you will need to apply and blend in sections
  • Beauty Bakerie is still building the number of brick and mortar stores that carry their products so you may only be able to find this online
  • Since you are more than likely going to have to order online you have to tack on shipping costs
  • You have to shade match using online comparison charts and swatches

As you can see most of my cons about this product, are less about the product and more about the logistics of getting it. The biggest con regarding the foundation itself is how dry it makes my skin feel. I tried it with different primers and without primer and it didn’t change. If you are someone with dry skin, this is probably a foundation you are going to want to pass on. Also, if you have skin that has more visible signs of aging, a foundation this dry will accentuate wrinkles and fine lines, although it worked well around my smile lines, I did notice that it made the fine lines around the corners of my mouth more prominent.

Overall, I personally like this foundation and I think it will be a great addition to my summertime makeup routine.
